Humpback Rocks is another Charlottesville classic, and only a 45 minute drive from downtown. The directions are easy; just take I-64 West from town until you see signs for the Blue Ridge Parkway (Exit 99) and head south to the parking area, which is around milepost 6. South on the Blue Ridge Parkway doesn't require a Shenandoah National Parks pass, so cheapskates out there....rejoice! You can also use the location of the parking area to get directions from wherever you are.
This hike is a bit rocky at the outside, so take care not to turn an ankle, and make sure and give yourself plenty of time to pick your footing. The rocks can also be very slippery after a rain shower or if it has been foggy recently, so be careful!
There are two ways to go about this hike. The first way is about a mile, out-and-back hike that gets you great views and back to the car in less than an hour - perfect if you only have a short time. The second way is to incorporate some sections of the A.T., and totals about four miles. Hiking Upward has a great description of a longer route that incorporates a few more views and challenges.
