This hike is similar to Hightop Peak, but offers more variety of up and down terrain, a small stream crossing or two, and less of a total elevation gain. However, it does have the advantage of a nice picnic and parking area at the trailhead, including picnic tables, a drinking fountain, and bathrooms. The picnic area is also the starting point for another popular day hike in the area, South River Falls. Follow the directions here to the parking area.
Start out on the South River Falls trailhead as shown in the picture below, but instead of going straight and following the trail, take a left on the Appalachian Trail junction, which is about 0.1 miles from the starting point. Follow the white blazes for about 2 miles - you will cross a fire road and a side trail which takes you back to Skyline Drive - to a small overlook on the left hand side. There is no loop on the return, just re-trace your steps.
The summit area is fairly flat and tree-covered, so don't expect to see an a obvious summit - the trail just levels off for a while, and then heads back down after you pass the overlook. The views are good from late fall until spring when the leaves are down, but doesn't offer much during summer and fall. On the upside, you can enjoy a nice picnic lunch upon your return! See the "South River Falls" hike for a loop from this location.
